NEC Electronics Inc.'s U.S. unit will close its 6-inch wafer fab line at its manufacturing facility in Roseville, Calif. by the end of March 2010.
At that time, NEC Electronics America will exclusively offer 8-inch wafer production in Roseville. Following NEC Electronics' announcement about the expansion of its 8-inch wafer fab line in 2006, the 6-inch line production levels were expected to eventually decline.
The 6-inch line uses mature process technologies of 0.35- and 0.25-micron. ''This decision aligns with parent company NEC Electronics Corp.'s strategy to consolidate select 6-inch fabrication lines worldwide to improve global manufacturing efficiency,''according to NEC (Tokyo).
Citing the downturn, NEC Electronics also posted sales of 127.3 billion yen ($1.4 billion) in the third quarter, down 25.4 percent from the like period a year ago. The company posted a loss of 19.9 billion yen ($219 million) in the quarter, compared to a loss of 936 million yen 9$10.3 million) a year ago.
NEC Electronics also cut its sales forecast for the year by 15.9 percent, from to 660 billion yen ($7.3 billion) to 555 billion yen ($6.2 billion). NEC Electronics also cut its profit forecast for the year, from a net of 1 billion yen ($11.1 million) to a loss of 55 billion yen ($610 million).
