Volkswagen developes electric car

Friday, February 13, 2009 Volkswagen AG (Wolfsburg, Germany) and Toshiba Corp. (Tokyo) have agreed to jointly develop electric automotive drives and the respective control electronics. In addition, the companies will cooperate in developing high-density battery systems for next-gen electrically-driven cars.

The electronics and drive development activities aims at Volkswagen's project dubbed "New Small Family". According to Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn the cooperation with the Japanese electronics vendor is an "important building block" in the company's alternative drives development.

Volkswagen has the goal to be the first automotive manufacturer to offer high-volume electrically driven cars, Winterkorn added. However, many technological problems have to be solved, in particular with lithium-ion batteries, before such cars can be affordable, Winterkorn added. The vehicle manufacturer already maintains a development cooperation with Sanyo in the segment of lithium-ion batteries.
