Powerchip to trim 5% of work force

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC), one of Taiwan's financially troubled DRAM makers, has cut 200-300 jobs, or less than 5% of its workforce, after the Lunar New Year holidays, according to the company.

Inotera Memories has also downsized its workforce by around 4.5% since early this year, according to company sources. Inotera has responded by saying that the move was part of its annual evaluation of personnel performance.

Inotera has cut more jobs during its annual evaulation this year than previous years, because it had previously taken in about 400 employees from MeiYa Technology in an effort to integrate the assets and resources between the two companies, the sources said.

In other news, industry sources believe that DRAM makers are still looking to further cut back their production, as DRAM spot prices are still below cash production costs.
