Qualcomm Inc. jumped from No. 13 to No. 8 in the world in semiconductor revenue while rival fabless chip vendor Broadcom Corp. leapt six positions to rank 17, according to a list of the top 20 chip vendors published Monday (March 2) by market research firm IC Insights.
After seeing revenue from IC sales decline 33 percent last year, memory supplier Hynix Semiconductor dropped from sixth place in 2007 to the No. 10 spot on the list. IC Insights noted that the company's current annual sales run rate is less than $4 billion.
The top five ranked companies remained the same from 2007 to 2008, IC Insights said. Most of the other top 20 suppliers moved up or down only one or two spots in the ranking, according to the firm
Geographically, the top 20 suppliers in 2008 were composed of eight U.S. firms, Six Japanese, three European, two South Korean, and one Taiwanese company (IC foundry TSMC), IC Insights said.
It required at least $3.6 billion in 2008 sales to make the top 20 ranking, IC Insights said.
DRAM-supplier Qimonda, which recently filed for insolvency, dropped 11 positions from No. 18 overall in 2007 to No. 29 in 2008, IC Insights said. With a 12 decline in sales, NXP fell five spots to No. 15 in 2008 from No. 10 in 2007, the firm said.
Although its sales declined a relatively mild 7 percent in 2008, Japanese DRAM supplier Elpida dropped out of the top 20 ranking, IC Insights noted.
Qualcomm (San Diego) marked a milestone following the third quarter of 2008 when it became the first fabless chip vendor to jump into the IC Insights top 20 suppliers list, which is complied quarterly.
