Intel Corp. is making its first major investment in French academic research that will focus on high-performance computing (HPC).

The five-year research project is part of a four-party agreement linking Intel with government agencies and academia.

The Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique, a technological research organization funded by the French government, is contributing its HPC tera-architecture and integration technology. France's national HPC agency, Grand Equipement National de Calcul Intensif, will provide scientific end-user applications. The University of Versailles St. Quentin en Yvelines will make technical contributions, including multicore performance evaluation and code optimization.

The joint research center will be built near Paris in a region that is home to universities and other scientific research facilities.

Intended to be used primarily university students in France and other European Union countries, the HPC lab will seek to accelerate R&D in Europe as part of the Intel Labs Europe initiative announced earlier this year.

The lab is designed as an "exascale" HPC center focused on hardware and software optimization.

The initiative follows Intel chairman Craig Barrett's keynote speech last week at the CeBIT exhibition in Stuttgart, Germany, where Barrett addressed the challenges of continuing innovation during an economic downturn.

Barrett also delivered an address at the 200-year-old University Politehnica of Bucharest, Hungary, and is scheduled to visit Serbia on behalf of the U,N. Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development and the Intel World Ahead Program.
