South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. announced that Wan Hoon (W. H.) Hong has been appointed chief executive and president of Samsung Semiconductor Inc.
He replaces Jon Kang, the former president of the company's U.S. chip subsidiary. Kang has returned to Korea in an unspecified post at the company.
Hong will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's memory, LCD, storage and system LSI divisions within the Americas. Hong most recently was senior vice president of memory marketing at Samsung Electronics in Seoul, Korea, where he was in charge of developing global marketing strategy for the world's number one memory company.
Samsung continues to reorganize its management ranks, as part of a strategy to boost its sagging bottom line and create fewer conflicts within its chip unit. Recently, the company stunned the industry by posting a loss in the first quarter, thanks in part to falling memory prices.
