Google Android to power Japanese Set-Top Box

Thursday, April 16, 2009

Japanese telecom company KDDI plans to offer an advanced set-top box for TV watchers this fall, one that uses Google's Android operating system. The au Box, designed and built by Motorola, will be able to play DVDs and CDs through a home entertainment system. It will also let users rip CDs, and is meant to serve as a music and video storage unit for mobile devices.

The chairman of the Open Embedded Software Foundation, Masataka Miura, said that the au Box will be on display at Japan's largest electronics show, CEATAC, in early October.
