Chip vendor Infineon has expanded its existing supply relationship to mobile handset vendor Nokia. The company will provide its XMM 2130 EDGE platform. With the move, Infineon widens its existing collaboration with Nokia. The company already provides two semiconductor platforms for Ultra Low Cost handsets to the Finnish vendor. By supporting the EDGE technology, the XMM 2130 enables handset manufacturers to offer higher bandwidth for wireless data transmission in 2G and 2.5G networks. The theoretical maximum bandwidth for EDGE is 473 kbit/s.
Infineon's EDGE platform, manufactured in 65nm technology, includes an EDGE modem, audio player FM radio receiver and interfaces for USB connections and for memory cards. According to Infineon, the high degree of integration was a major factor for Nokia's choice.
