Elpida Memory announced its preliminary consolidated financial results for its fiscal year ended March 31.
The DRAM maker had sales of 330 billion yen ($3.4 billion) for the year, down 18.6 percent over the previous year. It had a net loss of 180 billion yen ($1.8 billion), compared to a loss of 23.5 billion yen ($242.9 million) the previous year.
''A sharp 52 percent drop in average selling prices -- and yen appreciation were the main factors behind the sales decline,'' according to Elpida (Tokyo). ''An operating loss of 150 billion yen ($1.5 billion) was largely due to a sharp decline in net sales and cost cuts that were unable to catch up with the rapid drop-off in selling prices.''
Japan could provide government support for loss-ridden Elpida Memory, but no decision has been made. Elpida was also selected as a strategic technology partner of Taiwan's new memory venture.
