Worldwide Smartphone sales surpassed 36.4 million units in the first quarter of 2009, a a 12.7 percent increase from the first quarter of 2008, according to market analysis firm Gartner Inc.
Nokia led the market for smartphones with 41.2 percent market share, followed by RIM (19.9 percent), Apple (10.8 percent), HTC (5.4 percent) and Fujitsu (3.8 percent).
Symbian accounted for 49.3 percent of worldwide smartphone operating systems market share in the first quarter of 2009, down from 56.9 percent share in the first quarter of 2008. RIMs smartphone OS market share reached 19.9 per cent in the first quarter of 2009, up from 13.3 percent share in the first quarter of last year. The iPhone OS accounted for 10.8 percent of the market, up from 5.3 percent market share in the first quarter of 2008
