E-book chip market to reach $1.1 billion in 2013

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

Worldwide shipments of e-books are expected to grow from almost 1 million units in 2008 to close to 30 million units in 2013, according to market research company In-Stat. This shipment growth is expected to result in a semiconductor market of $1.1 billion in 2013, In-Stat said.

Amazon is emerging as the leader with its Kindle brand of e-book, In-Stat said. In the United States Amazon has partnered with cellular network operator, Sprint, to enable Kindle users to access digital e-books wirelessly

The semiconductor and electronic components segment spreads across the display assembly, processor, wireless module, DRAM, NAND, battery and enclosure. The display segment will represent the largest component opportunity, followed by the wireless module.

The processor opportunity within e-books will approach $227 million by 2013 while the bill of materials of a typical e-book will decrease by 23 percent between 2009 and 2013, as unit volume ramps up.

In-Stat also found that most of the e-books on the market today use the E-Ink electrophoretic display technology, but it does not rule out OLED or other display technologies in the future.

"Amazon and Sprint are providing an easy-to-use, end-to-end content delivery solution for the consumer, which is essential for mass market adoption of an emerging technology," says Stephanie Ethier, In-Stat analyst. "Rumors abound of new entrants to the e-book market, and the amount of digital content is only increasing. In-Stat believes that e-books represent a strong revenue opportunity for component suppliers, equipment manufacturers, and now wireless operators, alike."

Qualcomm has been touting the term Smartbook as a label for a new type of device, different to a smartphone and to a netbook, which would require one of its Snapdragon processors as the processing engine.
