Intel put more resource in energy R&D

Intel Corp. has revamped its R&D activities, by renaming the group and forming several new units in the arena.

The company has also formed a new group that will focus on energy. Intel's R&D efforts were under the company's Corporate Technology Group. The new R&D organization, to be called Intel Labs, will focus on mobility, visual computing, system-on-chip design and others.

Intel Labs will include five units. It includes several and separate existing groups, such as Circuit and Systems as well as Microprocessing and Programming. The company has also formed two new units within Intel Labs, such as Integrated Platforms and Future Technologies.

Another group, Intel China Labs, has been elavated into a new standalone group within Intel Labs. Intel has also form a new sub-group, dubbed the Energy Systems Group. That group will focus on smart building, smart homes and smart grids, said Justin Rattner, Intel's CTO, senior fellow and vice president and director of Intel Labs. Within Intel Labs, Intel boasts 1,000 researchers in 10 sites worldwide.
