Samsung using 45-nm process for ARM-11

Samsung Electronics Ltd has started sampling its ARM11-based application processor that will be made on its 45-nm CMOS process technology.


Dubbed the S5P6440 and based on the ARM ARM1176 CPU core which runs at either 533MHz or 667MHz lock speed, the part will be in volume production in the third quarter of the year and is targeted at low-cost and low-power consuming applications such as personal navigation devices.

The CPU core's 64-bit AXI bus runs at 166MHz.

The processor also integrates a 2D graphics accelerator that is compliant with the OpenVG application programming interface (API) standard. The device also has NAND error correction hardware which supports current and next generation MLC NAND flash devices.

The S5P6440 also integrates a DRAM memory controller that supports both mobile DDR (mDDR) as well as the lower cost DDR2 memory chips.

The part comes with a mobile industry processor interface (MIPI) display serial interface (DSI) for advanced graphics and display capabilities at low power. Operating system support includes WinCE and Linux. The chip is housed in a 13x13 FBGA package with a ball pitch of 0.65mm.
