Sales of semiconductors in Europe in May again underperformed other regions according to an analysis of the figures by the Semiconductor Industry Association provided by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization. However, this was on the back of a 0.9 percent decline recorded the previous month.
Global sales of semiconductors in May rose to $16.5 billion, an increase of 5.4 percent from April when sales were $15.6 billion. May sales were 23.2 percent lower than May 2008 when sales were $21.5 billion.
Expressed as month-on-month sales, Europe grew by just 0.4 percent, to $2.18 billion, while the best performer during May was Japan, where sales increased to $2.75 billion, representing an increase of 7.2 percent.
May sales in the Americas region were up 3.9 percent to $2.72 billion, while the biggest region, Asia Pacific, managed to grow by 6.7 percent, to be valued at $8.84 billion.
Europe was also lagging in year-on-year sales, down 34.6 percent on that achieved in May 2008, but shipments in Japan was even worse, down by 35.1 percent.
However, the latest statistics suggest that sales in Japan are moving up, while sales in Europe are static at best. Asia Pacific sales were down only 15.9 percent year-on-year, while those in the Americas region were off by 19.4 percent.
The most widely tracked three-month moving average of sales indicates a less somber situation in Europe, up 2.6 percent, but hugely overshadowed by the 28.9 percent achieved in the Asia Pacific region for the three months from March to May.
Expressed as three month moving average, Japan fared worst, down 1.3 percent, while the Americas region increased sales by 10.6 percent.
The European Semiconductor Industry Association's analysis of the WSTS figures, all based on three-month moving average, suggests that when expressed in Euros , sales in May, at Euros 1.64 billion, were down 1.6 percent on the previous month and down 23.2 percent compared with the same month a year ago. The decline when express as year-to-date sales was 23.8 percent when converted to Euros.
