Global Semiconductor Sale up 5%

Thursday, July 16, 2009 Global semiconductor sales for June are estimated to come in at a month-on-month increase of 4.5 percent against that achieved in May, and the 3-month moving average should rise by $900 million to 17.4 billion, according to market trackers at securities house Carnegie AS (Oslo, Norway).

The three month year-on-year sales are predicted to show a fall of 19.3 percent in June, compared with the 23.2 percent indicated the previous month.

Actual sales in June are expected to come in 21.5 percent lower for the year compared to June 2008. May's global market for semiconductors was $16.15 billion, down 20.2 percent from its value in May 2008, according to "actual" data from the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization.

Carnegie says it has used early indicators as well as taking into account second quarter results in the past few days from Intel and Samsung. It adds that official figures, using the benchmark data from the World Trade Statistics Organization (WSTS) are expected August 1st.

The analysts suggest sales should show a broad-based improvement in June, but PC and consumer electronics are estimated to have been particularly strong areas.

New handset model launches should boost handset chips compared to May. Car chips should improve, but car production is still lagging the rebound in car sales by a wide margin.

Carnegie is still sticking to its forecast that 2009 chip sales would fall 15 percent compared to the previous year, as expressed in U.S. dollars
