Xilinx working with foundries on 40nm FPGA supply.

Friday, July 17, 2009

Xilinx is reportedly working closely with United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) and Samsung Electronics, to ensure smooth supply of its recently-announced Virtex-6 and Spartan-6 FPGAs (field-programmable gate arrays) built on 40/45nm process technology, according to industry sources.

Both UMC and Samsung manufacture 40/45nm FPGAs for Xilinx, indicated the sources. UMC has been Xilinx' long-term foundry partner, whereas Samsung was added in February as a new contract manufacturer for the logic chipmaker.

Xilinx earlier mentioned supply constraints on certain Virtex-5 devices, manufactured using 65nm process, had resulted in downward adjustments to its revenue estimates for the April-June quarter.

UMC, which in April announced the delivery of 40nm generation products, has posted revenues of NT$22.63 billion (US$687 million) for second-quarter 2009. The result represents an over 100% increase from NT$10.84 billion in the first quarter, but still shows a decrease from NT$25.24 billion a year ago.

UMC is expected to enjoy a shipment growth of 8-10% sequentially in the third quarter, mainly driven by orders for 40nm chips, according to market watchers.

In other news, Xilinx has announced that net income for the quarter ended June 27, 2009 slid 56% on year to US$38.0 million. Despite the profit drop, Xilinx said sales from Asia Pacific represented a record 37% of its total sales during the quarter. The logic chipmaker expects to see sales grow 2-6% sequentially in the September quarter.
