Winbond Electronics announced on August 4 that its board of directors has approved a proposal to enter a product transfer and technology licensing agreement with Qimonda for licensing the GDDR specification.
Winbond said the plan is to acquire Qimonda's GDDR-related product design and technology, which will enable Winbond to enter the graphics DRAM application market. Graphics DRAM is used in desktops, notebooks and games consoles.
Winbond also reiterated that it is moving to reduce its dependence on commodity DRAM by shifting its business focus to the specialty DRAM and mobile RAM segments
