Qimonda Xian and Suzhou changed hand at auction

Monday, August 17, 2009

IT solutions provider and server manufacturer Inspur Group plans to take over German memory chip maker Qimonda AG's Xi'an research and development (R&D) center, reports 21st Century Business Herald quoting a Inspur Group employee on August 6. Inspur Group plans to announce acquisition details and its company chip strategy in mid-August, the employee said. Qimonda AG said August 5 that it would be auctioning its assets at go-dove.com until September 21, said the report.

The Xi'an location is Qimonda's second-largest of six major R&D centers; it focuses on storage chip technology and employs roughly 160 people, according to the employee. Inspur Group is paying a "low price" for the acquisition due to the financial crisis, the employee said without giving further details.

Another company controlled by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission's (SASAC) Suzhou branch has finished its acquisition of Qimonda AG's Suzhou packaging plant, which has more than 1,000 employees, the Inspur Group source said. China Daily reported in March that Inspur Group had ended acquisition talks with Qimonda AG, "leaving the German memory chip maker at the edge of insolvency."
