PSC to increase DDR2 production on price hike

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

DRAM maker Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) has increased production to 80,000 wafers per month, up from 40,000 units in the second quarter, according to industry sources. The chipmaker is moving to scale up monthly production further to 100,000 units later this year thanks to optimism about DRAM pricing trends.

PSC recently cut its foundry quotes aggressively to attract orders from IC design houses, indicated the sources, adding that foundry production now accounts for half of its monthly output. The DRAM maker has also seen more demand for DDR2 chips from customers.

Citing industry sources, DRAMeXchange said in its latest research that Kingston Technology has secured DDR2 supply from PSC in return for a fund injection to help the DRAM maker tide over its cash crisis.

PSC, which focuses mainly on the spot market, earlier this month said it plans to end compulsory unpaid leave for employees starting from August 21 on a bullish outlook for the computer-memory market in the second half of 2009.

Spot pricing for mainstream 1Gb DDR2 chips has trended upward to approach US$1.50, narrowing the price gap between DDR2 and DDR3, according to data gathered by inSpectrum. The spot price of 1Gb effectively tested (eTT) chips continued its growth momentum to close at US$1.41 on August 18, compared to US$1.25 two weeks ago and US$1.09 a month earlier.
