The US International Trade Commission is set to launch an investigation into certain types of flash memory chips following a patent claim from BTG
International. BTG claims the chips, found in products including smartphones and laptops, violate a patented method by which flash memory can store multiple pieces of data per cell without having to be bigger or more expensive.
The chips are used in products including Apple¡¯s iPhone and Research In Motion¡¯s BlackBerry Storm. BTG is calling for the US authorities to limit imports of the chips and any products containing them. Manufacturers Samsung, Apple, Dell, Lenovo, Sony, Research In Motion and Transcend Information have all been asked to provide information as part of the enquiry.
