Asustek Computer expects its consolidated revenues for third-quarter 2009 to increase by more than 20% sequentially as the company's shipments are picking up in China, Russia and some countries in Eastern Europe, according to president Jerry Shen, speaking at August 25 investors conference.
Asustek announced revenues of NT$48.98 billion (US$1.49 billion) for the second quarter, a slight growth of 6% sequentially, however the company still suffered net losses of NT$131 million.Despite losses in the second quarter, the company reported a profit of 323 million for the first half.
Asustek expects to ship 5.5-6 million motherboards, 1.8 million notebooks (of which 10-20% will be ultra-thin models and 50% will be mainstream models) and 1.5 million Eee PCs in the third quarter, Shen pointed out.
Shen said that the company is pessimistic about the future of smartbooks and therefore will continue to focus on developing netbooks that use Intel Atom CPUs and Microsoft operating systems, but it will keep an eye on the smartbook market. Shen also said the company is optimistic about e-book readers.
Shen admitted that sales of the Eee Top and Eee Box did not reach expectations, but said Asustek will continue to launch new products under the lines.Although most notebook component shortages have started to ease in the third quarter, while panel prices have also stabilized, shortages of DRAM modules will unlikely to be solved before the end of 2009, Shen added.
