AirBus to use MRAM chip in new aircraft

Friday, September 11, 2009 Everspin Technologies Inc., the magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM) spin-off of Freescale Semiconductor Inc., announced it is providing Airbus with high performance MRAM products for advanced wide body aircraft.

Under the terms of the agreement, Everspin (Chandler, Ariz.) said it is delivering 4Mb and 16Mb MRAM products for the Flight Control Computer on the Airbus A350 XWB civil aircraft. MRAMs are used for critical program and data storage in extreme environment applications.

MRAM, the company continued, allows Airbus to replace previously used SRAM and Flash components with a single non-volatile read/write memory that provides faster speeds, unlimited write cycles and easier software updates.

Everspin rolled out its first devices, more precisely a line of 1- and 4-megabit MRAMs, in November 2008
