DRAM manufacturers return to profit

Monday, September 14, 2009

Hynix Semiconductor will be the second among DRAM makers to swing back to profitability in the third quarter of 2009, followed by Micron Technology and Elpida Memory in 2010, according to industry sources in Taiwan. Samsung Electronics' memory unit, which posted a profit in the second quarter, may remain profitable throughout the end of 2009.

Taiwan-based DRAM makers, which are lagging international rivals in advanced memory process technology, are likely to be giving up their core business by switching to foundry or niche memory markets in the long-run, the sources commented. As the cash-strapped players are not yet capable of producing on sub-6Xnm nodes, a bullish rally for DRAM chips is still having little impact on their long-term profitability.

Samsung, Hynix, Micron and Elpida are on track to migrate to 40nm-class production in 2010, when DDR3 is likely to become the mainstream DRAM specification.

Taiwan's Nanya Technology and Inotera Memories are expected to enter 50nm production ahead of their domestic peers. Partnering with Micron, the two have said they are scheduled to complete the technology transition to 50nm stack at the end of 2010.

Winbond Electronics, which is accelerating its exit from the standard DRAM market, appears to outperform its domestic peers with monthly revenues returning to an on-year growth track. ProMOS Technologies has also shown an intention to turn its focus away from standard DRAM.

Inotera, Nanya, Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC), ProMOS and Winbond generated a combined loss of NT$27.52 billion (US$842 million) in the second quarter of 2009, showing improvement from a loss of NT$35.93 billion in the prior quarter but still a deterioration compared to a loss of NT$24.72 billion a year ago.
