Kingston secured sources by backing DRAM makers

Thursday, October 15, 2009

Kingston Technology saw revenues from the Asia-Pacific market score an historic high in September 2009, thanks to a rally in chip prices and improved demand, according to Scott Chen, the company's vice president for APAC business. Sales from its NAND flash product line grew significantly.

Kingston's shipments and revenues generated from Asia Pacific are expected to remain strong in October, mostly driven by the NAND flash segment, Chen said. Chen also expressed optimism about the memory market growth in the fourth quarter, estimating bullish prices for DDR2 chips through the end of 2009.

Industry sources have commented that Kingston's role as a supportive partner for financially-distressed DRAM makers allows the memory module house to minimize the impact of recent chip shortages especially for DDR2. Elpida Memory, Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) and ProMOS Technologies have given priority to Kingston, the sources said.

Kingston has also secured sufficient NAND flash chips from Toshiba and Intel, according to the sources.

Previous reports indicated that the supply of DDR2 has fallen short of demand since the beginning of second half of 2009, and the recent shortage has pushed up prices for 1Gb DDR2 to top US$2, beating the 1Gb DDR3 segment. As for NAND flash, major chip producers have allocated more supplies for Apple and system vendors, causing tighter supply of NAND flash for other downstream customers.
