SMIC to extend process to 40nm

Friday, October 16, 2009 Foundry chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp., which is fighting to catch up with the leading-edge semiconductor technology pace set by its rivals, has said it plans to extend its 45-nm bulk CMOS to 40-nm and 55-nm geometries.

The 45-nm process is based on technology licensed from IBM.

Applications for the additional processes are much the same as for the original 45-nm process and include multimedia products, graphics chips, chipsets, and mobile devices such as handsets integrated with 3G/4G.

When the additional nodes would become available was not disclosed. Nor was it said when SMIC would implement low-leakage versions of the process to complement a general-purpose process, which the 45-nm node is reported to be.

"Our 45-nm technology has been implemented at SMIC's 300-mm facility in Shanghai ahead of schedule and we look forward to a similar result at these additional geometries," said Richard Chang, president and CEO, in a statement. "These new offerings provide our current and new customers a customized set of solutions to meet their diverse product design-in needs."
