Nanya to offer CMos Image Sensors

Monday, October 26, 2009

DRAM maker Nanya Technology has been in talks with CMOS image sensor (CIS) designers Aptina Imaging, Himax Imaging, Omnivision and Pixart Imaging for the possible release of foundry orders, according to market sources. The memory producer is looking to maximize the utilization of its 8-inch facilities by manufacturing CIS chips.

Nanya currently has two 8-inch fabs, where it produces niche memory as well as providing capacity support for Macronix International Company (MXIC), a mask ROM and NOR flash maker, the sources said. Instead of spending a fortune upgrading the aging facilities for DRAM, Nanya intends to use them to tap CIS production, the sources indicated.

Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) and ProMOS Technologies have both stepped into CIS production at 8-inch fabs, according to previous reports
