Samsung, Toshiba, Micron dominate NAND flash market


Monday, November 2, 2009 The top three vendors of branded NAND flash memory increased their market share in the third quarter compared with the previous quarter, according to DRAMexchange Technology Inc., a Taiwan-based market analysis company. Samsung and Toshiba increased their clear market dominance while Micron's increased market share allowed it to overtake Hynix and jump into third position.

Most vendors benefited from restocking orders and the NAND flash average selling price went up about 4 percent quarter-on-quarter in 3Q09. Total branded NAND flash shipments increased 17 percent QoQ The total sales of the top six NAND flash makers 21.6 percent to $3.35 billion from $2.76 billion in 2Q09, according to DRAMexchange.

With sales of $1.29 billion in Q3 Samsung had 38.5 percent market share, followed by Toshiba with 34.7 percent market share and $1.16 billion revenue. Micron ranks No.3 with 9.4 percent market share and $316 million revenue while Hynix takes the fourth slot with $291 million revenue. Intel and Numonyx grab fifth and sixth positions with sales of $219 million and $75 million respectively.

Micron and Hynix form a middle tier with market shares of 9.4 and 8.7 percent respectively. Intel market share fell from 7.0 percent in Q2 to 6.5 percent in Q3 while Numonyx market share fell from 2.4 percent to 2.2 percent.
