Thanks in part to a surging memory market, sales for the top 20 semiconductor manufacturers increased 19 percent in the third quarter compared to the second quarter, according to market research firm IC Insights Inc., which Friday (Nov. 5) issued its ranking of the top chip vendors through the first three quarters of the year.
The top 20 chip firms also posted a 19 percent increase in sales from the first quarter to the second quarter, according to IC Insights (Scottsdale, Ariz.).
The strength of the DRAM and NAND flash markets helped Toshiba Corp. and Hynix Semiconductor Inc. post sequential third quarter sales increases of 30 and 31 percent, respectively, IC Insights noted.
Despite the fact that the semiconductor market is now expected to contract by roughly 12 percent this year, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Toshiba, Qualcomm Inc. and Mediatek Inc. are each expected to show sales growth for the calendar year, according to IC Insights. Qualcomm Wednesday reported a 7 percent decline in sales for its fiscal year, which closed Sept. 27.
IC Insights' top 20 semiconductor rankings companies by their cumulative sales total for the first three quarters of 2009. The firm said that if the rankings were based on third quarter sales only, Freescale Semiconductor Inc. would be bumped out of the top 20 by Japan's Elpida, which posted third quarter sales of just over $1 billion.
