The U.S. government will provide more funds for battery research and accelerate some green technology patent applications as part of a set of announcements made days before the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.
The U.S. government is making $100 million in new economic stimulus funds available for three broad areas including research in batteries for electric cars. The money will take the form of a second round of research grants available through the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy.
ARPA-E was innundated with as many as 3,500 applications for its first-round of grants announced in April. The agency funded 37 of the projects in areas such as energy storage, biofuels, renewable power, building efficiency and vehicles.
The new grants will be directed to programs to develop new fuels, capture carbon-dioxide emission from coal plants and develop batteries for electric cars. The battery program seeks to develop a new generation of ultra-high energy density, low-cost battery technologies for long electric range plug in hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles, based largely on goals set by the United States Automotive Battery Consortium.
