Nvidia have landed orders for Ion 2-based chips designed to support Intel's upcoming (Pineview) Atom N450, N470, D510 or D410 CPUs and Tiger Point chipsets from Acer, according to sources from PC makers.
Although the original Ion platform was a chipset with IGP, since Intel's Pine Trail-M for netbook and Pine Trail-D for nettop platforms shift northbridge functions (memory controller and IGP) onto the CPU, Nvidia's Ion 2 design for Intel platforms will resemble and act more like a discrete GPU, the sources noted. Nvidia will also maintain its plans to release a chipset to support VIA Technologies platforms.
Acer has so far enjoyed strong sales of its Ion-based AspireRevo nettops, and so the continued support with Ion 2 should help Nvidia's Ion business line to continue growing, the sources added.
