Elpida Memory has announced that its 300mm (12-inch) fab in Hiroshima, Japan has began mass production of 40nm 2Gb DDR3 SDRAM chips, which comes just two months after the company announced availability in early October.
Elpida initially plans to ramp up production of its 40nm 2Gb DDR3 SDRAM at the Hiroshima plant, according to the company. The Japan-based DRAM producer said it expects subsidiary Rexchip Electronics to start producing its new generation chips in the second quarter of 2010, and be able to increase the manufacture of 40nm products to lower production costs.
Elpida also noted that, depending on market conditions, it may transfer 40nm process technology to foundry partners ProMOS Technologies and Winbond Electronics to expand production to a higher level.
