Taiwan-based LED chipmaker Epistar said that LED lighting will become a mainstream product in the general lighting market when the price for a 1,000-lumen product drops to US$5.
The US Department of Energy hopes the retail price for a 1,000-lumen LED lighting product can drop to US$5 in 2012, but Epistar said it may only be able to come down to US$10.
In order for the retail price of a 1,000-lumen LED lighting product to drop to US$5, the price set by the manufacturers for their shipments will have to fall to US$3.Current manufacturers' quotes for a 400-lumen LED lighting product is about US$30-40.
The global LED lighting market is expected to reach US$1.9 billion in 2010, accounting for about 2% of the worldwide lighting market.
