Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has completed its fifth-phase 12-inch fab (Fab 12) construction at the Hsinchu Science Park.
Phase 4 and 5 of Fab 12 are the company's latest generation of production facilities designated for R&D as well as initial volume production. Phase 4 began volume production in third quarter of 2009, while construction on Phase 5 began at the end of the year.
In addition to volume production of 28nm products, TSMC said its Phase 5 facility at Fab 12 will also serve as the base for R&D of 22nm and more advanced process technologies. TSMC is currently conducting R&D for 28nm and 22nm process technologies at its Fab 12, first- and second-phase facilities, and will hand 28nm to the Phase 5 facility for volume production in the fourth quarter of 2010.
TSMC also noted Fab 14, located at the Tainan Science Park in southern Taiwan, will undergo fourth-stage expansion with the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled following the end of Lunar New Year. The Fab 14, Phase 4 facility will be ready for equipment move-in at the end of 2010, the company added.
