Semiconductor Manufacturing International (SMIC) will stop manufacturing specialty DRAM (SDRAM) chips since January 2010, and completely withdraw from the DRAM foundry business, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report, which did not cite any sources.
SMIC supplies one third of China's overall demand for SDRAM used in consumer electronics and home appliance applications such as refrigerators, digital TVs and portable media players. Its exit has pushed up spot market prices for 128Mb (16Mb×8) and 256Mb (32Mb×8) SDRAM chips, the paper said.
Wuhan Xinxin Semiconductor Manufacturing and Cension Semiconductor Manufacturing International, the two government-sponsored wafer fabs SMIC manages, have also stepped out of SDRAM foundry services, according to the paper.
