South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. Tuesday (Jan. 26) claimed to be the first company to commence mass production of panels for 3-D LED TVs and 3-D LCD TVs.
Samsung (Seoul, South Korea) said it began producing LED and LCD compatible panels for 40-inch, 46-inch and 55-inch full-HD 3-D TVs this month.
At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month, 3-D TV emerged as one of the stars. Many believe 3-D is a path to reviving sagging TV and media revenues, but a host of technical issues remain unsolved.
Market research firm DisplaySearch last week forecast that 3-D ready TVs would grow from 200,000 units in 2009 to 1.2 million in 2010 and hit 15.6 million units in 2013.
"Recently, 3-D displays have captured the industry spotlight," said Wonkie Chang, president of Samsung's LCD business, in a statement. "Samsung Electronics aims to lead the global 3-D TV panel market in pioneering panel mass production for 3-D LED and LCD TVs."
