iPAD name is owned by European electronic company

Thursday, January 28, 2010 Apple Inc. has unveiled with fanfare its iPad tablet-style mobile computer. Enthusiasm is likely to be rapidly waned as STMicroelectronics NV already has a registered patent on the iPad brand.

A search on the Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union (OAMI) website proves that STMicroelectronics filed on Sept. 1 2000 the IPAD trade mark. The application number is 001843937.

In the list of goods and services, OAMI specified: "Integrated circuits, monolithic circuits assembly, filters against electromagnetic interferences, protections against electrostatic discharges, line terminations, termination resistors, all these products applied in particular to cellular telephones, computers and computer peripherals."

Note that the expiry date is September 1, 2010.

A quick search on ST's website also indicates that "IPAD is a trademark of STMicroelectronics." In this case, IPAD stands for Integrated Passive and Active Devices.

Apple (Cupertino, Calif.) introduced its 'iPad' tablet on Jan 27. It is described as a 10-inch touch screen computer weighing about 1.5 pound. The device is "thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook" at one-half inch deep, Apple said. The iPad is expected to be available in late March, priced at $499 to $699.

The iPad has a 9.7-inch LCD screen and is powered by an Apple-designed system-on-chip known as A4, Apple said.

The company said the chip provides "exceptional processor and graphics performance" along with long battery life of up to 10 hours.
