Samsung unveil 30nm DDR3 Chip

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Samsung Electronics has rolled out the industry's first 30-nm-class DRAMs.

The 1.5- and 1.35-Volt DDR3 SDRAMs from Samsung (Seoul) are designed for servers, desktops and notebook PCs. The 30-nm-class process raises productivity by 60 percent over 40-nm-class DDR3. This will result in a doubling of production cost-efficiency, according to Samsung. The 30-nm-class 2-Gbit DRAM reduces power consumption by up to 30 percent over 50-nm-class DRAM.

A 4-Gigabyte (GB), 30-nm module when used in a new-generation notebook will consume only three watts per hour, which is just three percent of the total power usage of a notebook. The 30-nm-class DDR3 is scheduled for mass production in the second half of this year.
