Infineon offers reference design for Android phones

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 Infineon Technologies has announced the availability of the XMM6181 reference design to help engineers create entry-level Android smartphones.

XMM 6181 offers OS support for Android and smartphone functionality for handsets with wholesale prices of between $100 and $150, Infineon said.

The platform is based on X-Gold618 cellular system-on-chip that comprises an ARM11 processor core, multimedia-accelerators for video, graphics, and audio processing, a 5-megapixel image processor, 2G/3G baseband functionality, and power management. It is complemented by a multimode and multiband HSPA RF transceiver.

The X-Gold618 baseband supports WVGA (800 by 480 pixel) display resolution, video play and record (MPEG4, H.264/3) with 30fps, 5-megapixel camera, touch screen interface and high speed USB. Dedicated video, graphics and audio processors ensure high performance while being energy efficient, at the same time offloading the ARM11 CPU for support of user interface interaction and user applications. The platform is enabled to support Bluetooth, FM radio, WLAN and A-GPS.

The modem operates at 7.2-Mbps downlink and 2.9-Mbps uplink with quad-band 3G and quad-band EDGE functionality. The XMM 6181 platform solution includes a reference design, a complete RF engine, and an integrated Release 6 dual-mode protocol stack and will enable Android framework.

All components in the XMM 6181 platform are scheduled to ship in volume quantities in 2nd quarter of 2010.
