Apple announced that it had filed suit against HTC alleging twenty instances of patent infringement.
The case, filed with the U.S. District Court in Delaware and the U.S. International Trade Commission, stems from patents involving the iPhone's hardware, underlying architecture, and interface.
"We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it," Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, said in a statement. "We've decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours."
Chinese manufacturer HTC has developed numerous touchscreen and other phones to rival the Apple iPhone. Of late, most have used the Android operating system, including the Droid Eris and the Google Nexus One.
