Elpida Memory has revealed it is set to begin volume-producing 4Gb DRAM chips using 40nm-class process technology for server products and desktop PCs. The announcement comes around three months after it kicked off mass production of 40nm 2Gb products.
Elpida was quoted in previous reports saying it would initially migrate half of its 12-inch capacity to 40nm process by the end of 2010, and further conversion would depend on market conditions.
Rival Samsung Electronics earlier this year announced mass production of its 4Gb DDR3 chips using 40nm-class process, and said it looks to move around 90% of its total DRAM production to the node. Samsung did not provide a timeframe.
