Harman International and Research In Motion have reached an agreement for RIM to acquire QNX Software Systems from Harman. The deal is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close within 35 to 45 days.
QNX Software Systems operates as an independent operating unit within the Harman. Harman's automotive division sells branded audio systems through several car makers, including Mercedes-Benz, Toyota/Lexus, BMW and General Motors.
"We look forward to ongoing collaboration between Harman, QNX and RIM to further integrate and enhance the user experience between smartphones and in-vehicle audio and infotainment systems," Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at RIM, said in a statement.
The strategic move is expected to further strengthen QNX's penetration into the automotive market, according to the companies.
Harman International offers a range of audio and infotainment products for the automotive, consumer and professional markets. QNX Software Systems' QNX Neutrino operating system is deployed across automotive, industrial, telecommunications, medical, defense and aerospace products.
The QNX acquisition follows RIM's earlier announcement of making its VQ Mileage Tracker business application available for GPS-enabled BlackBerry phones. The software automatically tracks mileage.
VQ Mileage Tracker uses a BlackBerry's GPS along with an in-vehicle Bluetooth link to determine when the user starts and ends a trip.
QNX will be exhibiting at the Embedded Systems Conference-Silicon Valley from April 26-29.
