Intel has ported Google's Android operating system to its Atom microprocessor, according to multiple reports that reference Renee James, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's software and services group, as their source.
James revealed the move on the sidelines of the Intel Developers Forum being held in Beijing, the reports said.
James provided a second keynote on Tuesday (April 13), the opening day of the Forum. In the keynote she highlighted the need to provide a seamless experience for users across phones, cars and in the home. James emphasized how a unified operating environment running across a common compute architecture can give developers broader reach and easier access to end users, in any market segment.
Android is generally associated with processor chips based on processor architectures from ARM Holdings plc (Cambridge, England) and MIPS Technologies Inc. (Sunnyvale, Calif.).
"Intel is enabling all OSes for Atom phones," a PC World report quoted James as saying. Intel already has Android running on Atom-based smartphones and certain customers are interested in using it, the reported also attributed to James.
