UMC post profit for 1st Quarter

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) has reported net profits of NT$3.48 billion (US$111 million) for the first quarter of 2010, down 20.8% from NT$4.4 billion in the prior quarter.

UMC saw shipment volume for the first quarter achieve a record high of 1.033 million 8-inch equivalent wafers, and capacity utilization rose to 88%, according to the company. The results are in line with its guidance.

"We continued to experience robust demand, with ASP falling slightly compared to the previous quarter only because we focused more on supporting our customers' short-term product mix to strengthen our long-term partnerships," UMC CEO Shih-Wei Sun said.

UMC revealed that 65nm and below processes accounted for 18% of its total revenues in the first quarter, compared to 17% in the fourth quarter of 2009 and 11% a year ago. The proportion is expected to reach over 20% in the second quarter, according to the company.

The computer sector contributed 13% to UMC's first-quarter revenues compared to 11% in the prior quarter, on rebounding demand for PC peripheral chips and driver ICs. As a proportion of total sales, sales from the communication sector dropped 3pp sequentially, while sales from the consumer sector remained almost flat.
