Winbond returns to profit in 1st Quarter

Wednesday, April 28, 2010 Winbond Electronics, which has turned its focus away from the commodity DRAM business, has reported net income of NT$384 million (US$12.3 million) for the first quarter of 2010. The result marks its second straight quarterly profits, and the company's return to profitability from losses of NT$5.22 billion posted in the same quarter of 2009.

Winbond saw revenues for the first quarter more than double on year to NT$7.01 billion. Revenues for the quarter also show an 8% increase on a sequential basis.

Winbond said its niche memory products - specialty DRAM (SDRAM), mobile RAM, NOR flash and graphics DDR (GDDR) - accounted for 90% of its total revenues in the first quarter. Its sales proportion from commodity DRAM slid to 10% in the first quarter from 25% in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Winbond revealed sales generated from NOR flash rose 30% sequentially in the first quarter, thanks to growing orders for HDD, LCD TV, PC and PC peripheral applications. Meanwhile, revenues from mobile RAM increased 15% sequentially in the quarter.

Winbond noted it is ramping output for SDRAM chips using 65nm process technology. It also revealed mass production for GDDR3 and GDDR5 chips has kicked off in the second quarter
