Taiwan motherboard makers downgrades 2Q shipment forecast

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Asustek Computer recently updated its forecast motherboard shipment growth for the second quarter, from the original predication of a 10-15% sequential drop to a 5-8% decline, equivalent to a volume of around 5.3-5.5 million units, according to company president of motherboard business, Joe Hsieh.

With Asustek currently holding a 30% share of China's motherboard market, Hsieh believes that China's strong demand will help reduce the company's motherboard shipment decline in the second quarter

As upstream raw material prices continue to rise, putting pressure on motherboard makers, Hsieh noted that the company is already evaluating the necessity of increasing motherboard prices.

ASRock is expected to ship two million motherboards in the second quarter and aims to ship nine million in total in 2010, according to sources from motherboard players.

Micro-Star International (MSI) and Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) are expected to ship around two million motherboards in the second quarter and will see sequential drops of 12-15%, higher than the companies' own predictions of about 10%.

Gigabyte Technology expects its shipments in the second quarter to see a 10-15% sequential drop in the second quarter, down from 4.5 million units in the first quarter, the sources forecast that the company will only have a sequential drop less than 10%.
