Thursday, April 29, 2010

Microsoft rolled out an embedded versions of Windows 7 at the Embedded Systems Conference this week.

The operating system, announced last fall, is geared for a wide range of devices including thin clients, digital signs, industrial controls, set-top boxes, media players and TVs.

Windows 7 support multi-touch interfaces, new smart power management APIs and an ability through Windows Media Center to let consumers merge media content from disparate sources.

"The addition of the Windows Media Center feature in Windows Embedded Standard 7 is driving the set-top box, connected media device and TV markets by providing OEMs with opportunities to develop uniquely branded experiences and service providers with capabilities to explore additional revenue streams with unique content through a centralized media hub in the home." said Kevin Dallas, general manager of the Windows embedded group at Microsoft, speaking in a prepared statement.

Companies announcing plans to use Windows 7 included AOpen Inc., C-nario, DT Research Inc., Hewlett-Packard, Heber Ltd., Micro Industries Inc., YCD Multimedia and Wyse Technology.
