Asustek Computer expects to ship 7-8 million Eee PCs for a global netbook market share of 20% in 2010 and the company also expects to remain as the second-largest netbook brand in 2010, according to company CEO and president Jerry Shen.
Commenting on market watchers' estimates that Intel's Atom processor shipments will rise from 32 million units in 2009 to 35-40 million units in 2010, Shen believes the netbook market will still maintain, but will see weaker growth in shipments than before. As most of the netbook brands have already phased out their netbook lines, the current netbook market is dominated by Asustek, Samsung and Acer while Hewlett-Packard (HP) still evaluating whether to push the line in the second half to maintain its leading position in notebook market, Shen noted.
With expectations that price competition in the netbook market will turn weak soon, Asustek's current strategy is to launch machines with stronger specifications and additional value in exchange for higher ASPs and profits, Shen added.
Asustek has recently launched several new netbooks including the Nvidia Ion-based Eee PC 1218 and Eee PC Seashell 1015/1215 priced between NT$15,000-19,000 (US$478-605). The company will also launch new notebooks on May 13 including bamboo covered models and multimedia-enhanced models.
Asustek shipped about 2.5 million notebooks in the first quarter with shipments in the second quarter expected to reach 2.5-2.75 million units, according to market watchers.
