Infineon Technologies AG (Munich, Germany) is in talks with Intel Corp. (Santa Clara, Calif.) over the possible sale of its wireless chip business, according to the Financial Times Deutschland, which cites unnamed sources at Infineon.
The sources said that is a lot of interest in Infineon's mobile phone business at Intel. However, Infineon is not yet convinced that sale of one of its prime assets and a major part of its overall turnover makes sense.
In February Infineon said it would drive itself forward by focusing on power semiconductors and the Chinese market. At the time Peter Bauer, Infineon CEO, said: "The wireless division ranks at number four [in the global market.. Here we have successfully extended our business relationships in a vendor market which is undergoing consolidation. However, we must and we will increase our market share by further project wins."
Infineon has already divested its wireline communications IC business via a management buyout into a company called Lantiq.
