Macronix International Company (MXIC) plans to venture into the production of NOR flash memory products for automotive applications, according to company chairman Miin Wu.
Macronix will first offer NOR flash chips for dashboards, and then engine control units, Wu said. These applications require memory densities of below 64Mb, Wu added.
Macronix is also eyeing the NAND flash memory market for high-end storage applications, Wu indicated. The company will in-house develop and produce its NAND chips, and expects to deliver samples to potential clients in the first half of 2011, Wu revealed.
Macronix's NAND products will be available in densities ranging from 512Mb to 2Gb, according to Wu. The chips initially will be manufactured using 75nm process technology, said Wu, adding that the production node will then be transitioned to 57nm.
Macronix has no plans to develop NAND flash chips for solid-state drives (SSD), Wu noted.
