Data traffic over mobile networks is exploding, thereby requiring new technologies to keep up with the frenetic demand, according to Paul Jacobs, chairman and chief executive of Qualcomm Inc.
''Mobile is changing everything,’’ Jacobs said during a keynote at the Uplinq 2010 Conference, which is sponsored by Qualcomm.
But as widely reported, carriers are having difficulties in keeping up with data traffic demand. According to Jacobs, here are the mindboggling trends: 1) Data traffic has already exceeded voice traffic on the network; 2) Monthly data traffic in 2009 exceeded the combined total in 2008; 3) Social networking is growing 600 percent on Facebook alone; and 4) Some 300,000 users a day join Twitter.
And the growth will continue to explode. The trends, Jacobs said, are causing a troubling problem: Dropped calls and ''digital brown outs.’’
''That will make consumers very unhappy,’’ Jacobs said.
As a result, new technologies are required to meet this demand. During the event, Jacobs proposed various solutions to the problem:
1) 4G. Qualcomm is backing LTE to a large degree.
2) Smart engines to offload data on the network.
3) Dedicated broadcast technology. For example, Wired magazine takes an inordinate amount data on a digital device like Apple Inc.’s iPad. Dedicated broadcast technology is said to offload the data.
